Judiciary Exhibit Readiness to Expedite Adjudication of Electoral Cases

The Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards, in the company of the Minister of Works & Public Assets-Peter Bayuku Konteh, Senior members of the Judiciary and contractors left for the Provinces on the 5th May, 2023 to assess the suitability of Courts ahead of the June 24th general elections.

This medium learnt that the move, among other reasons, is part of the Judiciary’s efforts to set up independent Registries where cases are filed at the Specialized Electoral Court while regular Court sittings will be ongoing uninterrupted. It will further ensure expeditious adjudication of electoral cases through the deployment of Judges in every District.

The Judiciary, it was also understood, will be decentralizing its operations through the deployment of Judges to Judicial Districts to preside over Elections related cases during the elections period already underway.

Visiting with the team from the Judiciary includes the Court Operations Manager, Olayinka Laggah; Deputy Master and Registrar, Lansana Kotor Kamara Esq.; Facilities and Assets Officer, James Sesay; and the Public Relations Officer 2, Francis H. Murray. Also the team includes Paul S A Bockarie, Chief Director Ministry of Works and Public Assets and other staff of the Ministry.

Amidst glaring challenges such as poor Court infrastructures, limited number of Judges and staff, and huge funding gap, the Chief Justice has committed his administration to effective and efficient justice delivery.

Minister Sirleaf Meets UAE’s Minister of Interior -Seeks Partnership And Support

Internal Affairs Minister, Varney A. Sirleaf is currently in the Middle Eastern country of United Arab Emirates (UAE), as guest of that country’s Minister of Interior, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Minister Sirleaf’s visit is at the invitation of Interior Minister Sheikh Al Nahyan, as during a meeting Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in the Emirates’ Capital Abu Dhabi, Shiekh Al Nahyan said the invitation to his Liberian counterpart was a result of the high-level bilateral cooperation between the two countries and friendship subsisting between Presidents of the two countries who share common values.

Sheikh Al Nahyan described Liberia as an important Country to the UAE and the rest of the world. A Press release from the Ministry of Internal Affairs says the two Ministers discussed several issues of mutual interests.

According to the release, the Liberian Internal Affairs Minister used the visit to seek partnership for private and public sector initiatives in both countries. The Internal Affairs Minister appealed to the UAE official to support the Decentralization Program in the form of logistics, capacity building and other technical expertise.

“Under the Decentralization Program our Legislature passed a Law known as the Local Government Act of 2018 that essentially devolves certain fiscal, administrative and political powers to local and municipal authorities.

“If successfully carried out, basic human and social services would be easily accessed at local levels. To do this, we need trained personnel, basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment and logistics”. Minister Sirleaf stressed.

Minister Sirleaf also sought assistance for Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) and the Liberia National Police (LNP).

He said support to the LIS would enhance the institution’s capacity to effectively manage Liberia’s air, water and land borders. The release quote the Internal Affairs Minister as saying, it is important to strengthen the LNP for internal security and the maintenance of law and order because these are essential post-war peacebuilding initiatives.

He said technical and logistical support would be particularly crucial given the fact that Liberia is gearing up for Presidential and Legislative elections in October 2023, managed exclusively by Liberians.

Meanwhile, Honorable Sirleaf commended authorities of the United Arab Emirates for the state-of-the-art hospital complex constructed in Bopolu, Gbarpolu County, and also lauded the UAE for standing with President George Manneh Weah for sponsoring many Liberian Muslims to Hajj in the last few years.

In response, Sheikh Al Nahyan said he was pleased to host the Liberian Internal Affairs Minister; pledging to collaborate with the Minister for the attainment of requests of the Minister.

He urged Minister Sirleaf to commission a technical team that will visit the UAE to work alongside UAE counterparts to finalize the details of the support. “Your President is well known here. We respect his honesty and determination. Anything you want us to do, we will do.” Sheikh Al Nahyan declared.

LFA Boss Vows To Decentralize Football Development In Liberia

Liberia Football Association (LFA) President, Mustapha Raji has assured Liberians of his administration plans to decentralize the development of football across Liberia.

This, Raji maintained will serve as a means of creating opportunities for young athletes through the FIFA forward fund program.

However, it is no secret that the LFA and development of football under ther leadership of Raji has taken a positive dimension both nationally and internationally in the world of soccer development.

Furthermore, Liberian soccer athletes are also benefiting from several initiatives evidence by the erection of a modern electronic scored board at the Antiontte Tubman Stadium and the transformation of Tusa Field to an artificial playing pitch.

Through the “FIFA Foward Fund” as a way of creating opportunities for Liberians, the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Stadium in Paynesville as also been upgraded to international standard since its banned years ago.

Addressing the Ministry Information regular press briefing Thursday, May 4, 2023 in Monrovia, Raji also called on Liberians to remain supportive of his administration vision to ensure the decentralization of football across the country.

According to him, through the “FIFA Foward Fund” program, the people of Grand Bassa County for the first time are celebrating an artificial playing pitch, noting it is also concern to create opportunities and facilities for people to play.

“The vision is not just to create opportunities or facilities for people to play in Montserrado County, but we are here for Liberians in all parts of Liberia. The people in Grand Kru, Maryland, Bomi and other counties are given the same opportunities that we are doing in Montserrado,” he asserted.

The LFA boss further noted that in the decentralization of football development, the people of Nimba County are about to benefit from the construction of ” Tomah Seh Floyd Stadium to an artificial playing pitch, which again will create several opportunities for the people of Sanniquelli, Nimba County in football development.

Meanwhile, Rajii has also disclosed that the football governing body remains apolitical in the development of soccer and maintains that the vision of the LFA under his leadership is not just to develop football pitches, but to also build infrastructure that Liberians will benefit from.

According to him, both the World Bank, LFA and Liberian government have agreed to work together to develop three additional structures or facilities in Liberia for football development.

The project is geared towards creating opportunities for girls and boys in football, improving their health proving job opportunities because it will be implemented by a Liberians-owned company guaranteed by the World Bank.
