Alleged domestic violence: Seun Kuti debunks assaulting his wife.

Nigerian afrobeats musician Seun Anikulapo Kuti, has finally debunked the claims that he physically and verbally abuses his wife.

It happened that Seun was heard yelling at his wife during his argument with a police officer in a viral video that led to his arrest.

This spanked up rumours that Seun’s wife could be a victim of domestic violence.

Seun immediately reacted to this during his recent Instagram live session with fans, saying that his wife is not scared of him, rather he is the one who is scared of her.

He claimed that people who were exonerated with his family were able to testify to such.

He said:

“The most important rumour I must dispel, is the one they said that I’m beating my wife. They said I screamed at her to get into the car [in the viral video] and she went into the car…”

“That she is scared of me. My wife is not scared of me. Trust me, if you know anybody that knows us, I’m the one that’s scared of my wife. But my wife respects me.”

“And I know that many of you Nigerian men were just jealous to see a man that can talk to his wife and his wife would listen. That’s the problem. It’s jealousy.”

Teni Shares Brand New Single ‘No Days Off’. LISTEN

Teni, one of the most distinctive and captivating voices on the scene, takes things in a new direction with club-ready single “No Days Off,” out May 12th on Platoon. “No Days Off” sees Teni reflect on her journey thus far, highlighting the value of a great support system, diligence, persistence, and consistency as she prepares for her busiest year to date.

Starting out as a freestyle, the song was created after Teni heard the beat at a friend’s house and it stopped her in her tracks. It was made on various stages around the world and has already generated a lot of buzz online and IRL at Odunsi (The Engine)’s Lagos Concert. “No Days Off” pairs sharp Afropop percussion with ethereal synth melodies and Teni’s fluid, genre-hopping vocals.

Teni says; “No Days Off’ was made everywhere in the world – that’s why it really is called, ‘No Days Off’. It was made in Lagos, it was made in LA, some parts of it were also made in Cape Town.” she adds, “I love this song, it means so much to me and I know you guys are also going to find your meaning to it.

In the lyrics, Teni references her love of basketball – you can catch her at the next Atlanta Hawks game – and gives a shout-out to her homies and hometowns:

“I’ve been shooting hoops on the court with no days off / And you know I put my life on the line and it paid off. Just imagine if I didn’t leave Atlanta for Lagos /Tobi, Bunmi, Brenda & Wale, that’s my day ones”

Teni’s most recent song, “Maitama (Going),” builds on the popularity of last year’s ‘Maitama (Going), a memorable duet with Mayorkun, Ch’cco, and the late Costa Titch. It once again demonstrates the songstress’s wide musical range and melodic prowess. Teni debuted on COLORS earlier this year, appeared on Stormzy’s most recent album, “This Is What I Mean,” and has previously worked with Wizkid and Davido.

Teni is renowned for her upbeat, stylistically diverse songs that set her apart from other Afro-pop artists of the same era. When a handful of tracks, including “Case,” attracted a streaming audience in the millions in 2018, she initially gained notoriety.

Billionaire, her first EP, was released in 2019. Before collaborating with DJ Neptune on the The Quarantine Playlist EP the next year, she received nominations for the BET Award for Best New International Act and the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act in the same year. Following the release of her critically praised album WONDALAND in 2021, the celebrity became independent.

In a Release dated 27th May, 2023 and issued by the European Union it was stated that this week the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) deployed 28 long-term observers (LTOs) to all 16 districts of Sierra Leone.

“The long-term observers are the backbone of this election observation mission. Their findings and observations will be vital in forming an impartial and evidence-based assessment of these elections,” the Chief Observer, Ms Evin Incir, Member of the European Parliament is quoted to have said.

It was also pointed out that in line with the EU methodology, the EU EOM to Sierra Leone applies a long-term, country-wide election observation approach that enables the mission to offer a balanced and substantive analysis of electoral processes across the country.

Further mentioned was that in their respective areas of observation, the EU EOM LTOs will follow and analyze at the regional level the aspects of the electoral process that the core team members assess at national level. Giving an example, it stated that the LTOs will observe the election preparations, the election campaign, and the activities of electoral stakeholders.

Worthy of note is that the long-term observers have been deployed in multinational teams of two and, prior to their deployment, received comprehensive briefings on a wide range of issues, including on the election administration, the political environment and the legal framework governing these elections, as well as on the traditional and social media landscapes.

Additionally stated was that the EU EOM is deployed in a response to an invitation by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone and started its activities on 11 May and is led by Chief Observer Ms Evin Incir, Member of the European Parliament, who officially launched the Mission on 23 May in Freetown, after holding a series of meetings with many high-level stakeholders.

The EU stated how closer to election day 40 short-term observers will join the EU EOM to observe the voting, counting and tabulation of the results.

In addition, a delegation of members of the European Parliament and some 10 locally-recruited short-term observers from the diplomatic missions of EU member states accredited to Sierra Leone will also join the EU EOM to observe the election day proceedings.

The EU said at full strength the EU EOM will comprise some 100 observers, drawn from 26 EU member states, Canada, and Norway.

It continued that the EU EOM will hold a press conference and issue a preliminary statement two days after the elections and a final report offering recommendations for future electoral processes will be presented after the completion of the entire election process.

Also added was that the EU EOM is bound by a code of conduct, which requires strict neutrality and non-interference and it undertakes its work in accordance with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation, endorsed under UN auspices in 2005.

CDC Lambast UL Administration Over US$300 Charged For Graduation

The ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has termed as unnecessary and unacceptable the collection of over US$300 as graduation fees from graduates by the University of Liberia (UL).

The administration of the state-run university is collecting US$375 from all undergraduates of its 103rd graduating class, 2023.

But addressing a major news conference Monday, May, 29, 2023 at the CDC headquarters in Congo, the party’s Secretary General, Jefferson T. Koijee questioned the rationale behind such decision by the University.

Koijee who is also the Monrovia City Mayor, said the CDC as a political party does not support the decision of the administration of the UL to demand such fees from struggling students and Liberians.

According to him, he has been instructed by the CDC National Chairman, Mulbah K. Morlu to do an official communication to President George Weah, seeking the rationale behind the graduation fees payment and his quick intervention.

Koijee at the same time termed as an ‘undermining factor’ of the efforts of President Weah in providing affordable education for all citizens across the country, the decision of the state-run university and other universities to Charged graduating students exorbitantly.

He maintained that the CDC is not willing to accept such decision and there should be no collection of graduation fees for the fact the Liberian leader had instituted the tuition free policy since 2018.

Meanwhile, Koijee has also called on the Ministry of Education to make a swift intervention into the matter before the arrival of President Weah on the campus of the University of Liberia.

According to him, it makes absolutely no sense for the administration of the state-owned higher learning institution to collect over US$300 from graduates, and stressed that such decision undermines and opposes the President’s dream and aspiration to motivate hundreds of Liberians through the provision of free, affordable and quality education.

Health workers’ strike continues as FG, JOHESU failed to reach agreement

The Nigerian government and the striking health workers, under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), meeting has ended in a deadlock.

The national vice chairman of JOHESU, Mr Obinna Ogbonna, explained this to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) shortly after the union’s indefinite strike on Thursday, ended in a deadlock.

The health workers commenced an indefinite strike over federal government’s failure to meet their demands.

Mr Ogbonna said it was pertinent for the union to embark on the strike following the expiration of the ultimatum sent to the government.

He said the majority of persons present at the meeting on Thursday were from FMOH which led to an adjournment of the meeting.

He said:

“On getting to the meeting, we discovered that all of the people, except those from the national salaries incomes and wages commission, were all from the FMoH and the minister who had already taken a position over the matter that it is impossible to give the adjusted CONHESS, was the one who presided over the meeting.”

“We had to tell him that he is an interested party in this matter and for the ministry to have allowed us to declare a strike and according to the labour law, there is a trade dispute already and if a trade dispute is declared, the interested party should not be the one to preside over the matter anymore because you cannot be a judge in your matter,”

Nigerian Government, WHO train groups on emergency response in Yobe State.

The federal ministry of health in conjunction with the World Health Organisation (WHO) has started training on Strengthening and Utilising Response Groups for Emergencies (SURGE) in Yobe State.

The chief consultant epidemiologist, federal ministry of health, Dr Godwin Ntadove, in Damaturu said the essence of the programme was to build the capacity of health workers within the communities.

Dr Godwin also said it would provide infrastructure to address effectively all sorts of emergencies.

He said a pilot programme will be carried out in a state from each of the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Dr Godwin said:

“The emergencies do not give warnings. In 2014 there was an outbreak of Ebola virus in West Africa, most people were affected and died.

“In 2020 and 2021 we had COVID-19, which is still fresh in our memory. So many people died not only in Nigeria but across the world,”

Dr Godwin further explained that one of the challenges noticed, was that no country had adequate preparation for such emergencies.

He said:

“Mostly, we begin preparations when emergencies occur and you are not likely to achieve much.

“Most people would have died before you commenced your intervention,”

Dr Nuhu Ningi, the WHO Coordinator, Yobe state, said that SURGE is an initiative to ensure readiness to address emergencies as they occur.

Dr Nuhu also claimed that it is a WHO initiative to support member states so that death and casualties would not continue to occur as a result of emergencies.

Nuhu said:

“WHO is ever ready to support and continue to monitor the progress and the success of this initiative,”

World Record Holder Chef Hilda Baci Reveals She Was Once Homeless

Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, a Nigerian chef who set a new world record for the longest single cooking session, has admitted that she was formerly homeless.

This was revealed by the chef, who is from Akwa Ibom State, in a recent TVC interview on Monday.

“A lot of people see this buzz now, and most of them think I dropped from the sky. They don’t know I was homeless at some point. There’s an entire phase and journey that got me here, and I’m not even done.

“This is still part of a journey. I’m still on a path, and I’m still going. It’s not always going to be rosy. It’s not always going to be easy. But we need more examples like this so people can say, ‘Hilda did it, so I can do it as well.’”

On May 11, Hilda Baci began her four-day cooking challenge at the Amore Gardens in the Lekki neighborhood of Lagos State. By 8:32 a.m. on Monday, Hilda Baci had cooked for 88 hours and 32 minutes, matching the previous mark of 87 hours, 45 minutes, and 00 seconds established by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
