CDC Lambast UL Administration Over US$300 Charged For Graduation

The ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has termed as unnecessary and unacceptable the collection of over US$300 as graduation fees from graduates by the University of Liberia (UL).

The administration of the state-run university is collecting US$375 from all undergraduates of its 103rd graduating class, 2023.

But addressing a major news conference Monday, May, 29, 2023 at the CDC headquarters in Congo, the party’s Secretary General, Jefferson T. Koijee questioned the rationale behind such decision by the University.

Koijee who is also the Monrovia City Mayor, said the CDC as a political party does not support the decision of the administration of the UL to demand such fees from struggling students and Liberians.

According to him, he has been instructed by the CDC National Chairman, Mulbah K. Morlu to do an official communication to President George Weah, seeking the rationale behind the graduation fees payment and his quick intervention.

Koijee at the same time termed as an ‘undermining factor’ of the efforts of President Weah in providing affordable education for all citizens across the country, the decision of the state-run university and other universities to Charged graduating students exorbitantly.

He maintained that the CDC is not willing to accept such decision and there should be no collection of graduation fees for the fact the Liberian leader had instituted the tuition free policy since 2018.

Meanwhile, Koijee has also called on the Ministry of Education to make a swift intervention into the matter before the arrival of President Weah on the campus of the University of Liberia.

According to him, it makes absolutely no sense for the administration of the state-owned higher learning institution to collect over US$300 from graduates, and stressed that such decision undermines and opposes the President’s dream and aspiration to motivate hundreds of Liberians through the provision of free, affordable and quality education.
