STOCKHOLM, Sweden – The Liberian community in Sweden came together to celebrate their country’s 176th Independence Day in a spirited event held in Stockholm City.

The celebration, which lasted from July 21 to 23, 2023, was organized by the Liberian Swedish Association, an organization dedicated to empowering and connecting Liberians residing in Sweden.

The festivities brought together Liberians from various European countries, as well as other Africans, creating an atmosphere of unity and shared purpose.

A notable highlight of the event was the presence of Eddie D. Jarwolo, a prominent civil society leader and social activist, who served as the Keynote Speaker.

In his keynote address, Eddie Jarwolo set the tone for the event by highlighting the significance of shared responsibility in fostering a better future for Liberia.

He spoke eloquently about the current political and social challenges faced by the country, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and unity to overcome these obstacles.

Jarwolo drew attention to the critical stages of the electoral process, from voter registration to candidate nomination, and highlighted the importance of fair and transparent campaigning, voting, and result announcements.

He stressed that addressing the country’s developmental issues would require a collective effort to hold elected and appointed leaders accountable for their actions and promises, ensuring that the dividends of democracy positively impact the lives of all citizens.

The activist expressed concern over the country’s underdevelopment, pointing to poor leadership, weak political institutions, and widespread corruption at all levels of government as significant obstacles.

He called on Liberians living abroad to unite with civil society in combating corruption, money laundering, drug trafficking, and holding leaders accountable for failed campaign promises.

Jarwolo is the Executive Director of Naymote, a leading grassroots organization promoting democracy, peacebuilding, human rights, and civic engagement.

As Liberia approaches the October 10, 2023 elections, Jarwolo urged vigilance, stating that any attempt to undermine the peace could lead to political violence.

He called on the international community and Liberians abroad to closely monitor the situation and be ready to take decisive action against those seeking to disrupt the peace.

While expressing gratitude for the support provided by Liberians living abroad to their friends and relatives back home, Jarwolo asserted that such assistance is not enough.

He highlighted the wealth of natural resources in Liberia and emphasized the importance of effective leadership, transparency, and accountability in managing these resources to create jobs and improve the livelihoods of Liberians.

In conclusion, Eddie Jarwolo called for a collective effort to advance the principles of good democratic governance, emphasizing that it is only through shared responsibility and active contributions that Liberia can achieve lasting peace, security, and prosperity.

His powerful speech resonated with the audience, igniting a sense of purpose among Liberians in Sweden and beyond, to work together for a brighter future for their beloved nation.

U.S. Based Activist Torli Krua Declares July 25 Economic Freedom Day for Liberians

Ahead of Liberia 176th Independence day celebration, the Founder of the Free Liberia Movement, Rev. Torli H. Krua has declared July 25, 2023, Economic Freedom Day for all Liberians.

Rev. Krua, through a Zoom Press Conference from Boston, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American Revolution called on Liberians to join the Free Liberia Movement at midday 12:00 Noon on July 25, 2023, to request an answer to the petition presented to the US Embassy on January 18, 2023, during Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week celebrations in Monrovia.

“Liberia wasn’t created as an African democracy. Therefore, Liberia cannot automatically become a democracy based on elections conducted in a corrupt system that caters to wealthy individuals that exclude citizens’ input and participation,” he said.

“Liberia was unlawfully designed, created, and sustained by corrupt American slave masters to protect the property (slaves) of slave masters as well as advance American domestic and foreign policy agenda. 200 years later, Liberia is still corrupt because corruption is in its DNA and therefore Liberia cannot be rescued or fixed by politicians because Liberia’s corrupt system of governance was designed to enrich and empower politicians. ‘Garbage in-garbage out.”

Rev. Krua has been advocating for the rebirth of Liberia since he launched his Free Liberian Movement a few years back. Through extensive research including review of historical documents, Rev. Krua says Liberia was founded by the United States Government through a corrupt and crooked arrangement with the sole purpose of enslaving more Africans than granting them their freedom.

He said this “corrupt and deceptive” system under which Liberia was formed continues to haunt its government and people, hence a need for a rebirth. This year’s advocacy comes at a time Liberia is conducting its presidential and legislative elections. There are over 1,000 aspirants including 20 presidential aspirants vying for just 90 seats, according to the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Rev. Krua said Liberians are being deceived by politicians who claimed to be “fixers”, or “redeemers.” “A corrupt tree cannot be rescued or fixed when it’s bearing corrupt fruits. It must be uprooted and a new seed planted. Matthew 12:33 “Make a tree good and its fruits will be good. Or make a tree corrupt and its fruits will be corrupt. A tree is known by its fruits.” Rev. Krua said.

The Press Conference was attended by Liberian presidential candidate, former Bong County Senator Senator Franklin Siakor, who complained of the unfair application of Liberian election laws that have damaged his candidacy. Senator Siakor has taken the matter to the Supreme Court.

Rev. Krua’s advocacy comes at a time the United States Congress has reintroduced S.40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act.

The Reparations Bill, H.R. 40 aims “To address the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery, its subsequent de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies, and for other purposes.

“Thank God for 172 members of Congress who have dedicated themselves to HR 40, to study America’s past transgressions that are ravaging the lives of Americans today,” Rev. Krua stated.

Rev, Krua complained about the “fragility” of American democracy which he said is being punctuated by ongoing investigations and convictions in the January 6th insurrection, recent shocking rulings from the US Supreme Court relative to abortion, affirmative action, and gay rights, and increasing uncertainties about the 2024 presidential campaign with Trump as a leading candidate.

According to Rev. Krua, America remains deeply divided but American politicians are distracted and focusing on issues abroad, including the Russian violent colonization of Ukraine which is being met by NATO’s support in billions of dollars in weapon support (“as long as it takes”).

He noted that poverty is increasing across the USA, and Liberia, a colony created by the USA. The poorest district in the richest nation on Earth, he noted, exists not by accident, but by design and racism codified in American law on March 26, 1790 which states that only “white persons” were eligible for US citizenship.

He said that the suffering and pain continue here in Liberia also because of a racist law passed by Congress on March 3, 1819, to create an American colony in Africa for the purpose of fulfilling American domestic and foreign policy objectives as well as banishing American citizens of color from the United States.

He added that on May 28, 1830, the Indian Removal Act initiated the ongoing suffering of Americans in Indian Reservations, including the poorest district, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. “American politicians continue to publish a false narrative of hate speech against Liberians and African Americans,” he said.

Pres. Weah Hails Golden Image Awards as National Pride Promoting Peace and Unity

President George M. Weah has hailed the Golden Image Awards (GIA) as a national pride that promotes peace, unity, reconciliation, and development.

President Weah said the future of the GIA remains bright and pledged Government’s continued support to the organizer, the Crusaders for Peace, in its works to advance national peace and reconciliation.

The Golden Image Awards is Liberia’s version of “the Oscars” in the US. It was launched in 2011 by the Liberia Crusaders for Peace to honor and recognize local and international personalities who have made great impacts on their societies.

In a special statement at this year’s ceremony on Friday, July 21, 2023 at the Monrovia City Hall, President Weah noted that a Golden Image Award has begun a national tradition every year giving due recognition to individuals and institutions that have distinguished themselves during the past year in their daily undertakings.

He expressed optimism that the awards that are won collectively and individually would serve as an inspiration and a catalyst spurring works and deeds that give the honorees worthy recognition.

“This year is also a special celebration in our collective quest to show the world, yet again, about our commitment to advance our democratic credentials by holding free, fair, transparent, and democratic elections that will satisfy international standards,” the President asserted.

He also stated that he was of the conviction that such an undertaking will demonstrate to the world that Liberia has truly turned the page from its recent checkered history, and is now on an irreversible path of enduring peace and lasting democracy.

President Weah also weighed in on the pending October 10 polls, saying that the theme of this year’s Awards, “Giving Hope to Our People Through Peace, Non-Violence and Credible Elections”, could not have been a clearer clarion call.

“It signifies a strong commission to demonstrate to the world our collective resolve to keeping our democratic credentials on track.”

He continued: “No matter how deep our political cleavages and differences, we will go to the polls avoiding any form of violence, in order to choose our leaders in an atmosphere of peace.”

President Weah used the occasion to once again assure Liberians and the wider international community that his government would meet all expectations by conducting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections.

“I want to use this occasion tonight to again signal to the world our unwavering commitment to a peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and democratic process.”

He said this year’s Independence Celebration will be a renewed vigor and hope, based on the premise that the country is headed in the right direction, reminding Liberians of the importance of holding together “as doing so will bring solutions to address the many challenges that have faced us as a result of the devastation and destruction that was caused by our prolonged civil war”.

The country observes 176 years of independence next Wednesday with befitting elaborate programs.

President Weah thanked Ambassador Julie Endee and the Crusaders for Peace, organizers of the Golden Image Awards, for putting together such a splendid program.
