Sierra Leone, Others Plan Action Against Coup Leaders in Niger

Members of The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including Sierra Leone and other West African states, are planning to take military action against coup leaders in Niger.

Guard chief General Abdourahamane Tchiani declared himself winner when the Nigerien military overthrew the democratic government of Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 this year.

Regional Bloc, ECOWAS issued an ultimatum to the coup plotters to hand over power to Bazoum by the end of the week or risk military intervention.

The move by ECOWAS has been criticised by Niger’s fellow Francophone neighbours, Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso.

A joint-communique issued by Mali and Burkina Faso revealed that the two nations plan to retaliate against ECOWAS in the case of a military intervention against Niger.

The coup has been widely supported by the local population. Supporters were seen on Sunday chanting pro-Russian slogans outside the French Embassy in the capital, Niamey.
