Gov’t’s $25m investment in Movie Industry Laudable – Enoch Atakorah

The Head of Zylofon Media Production, Enoch Atakorah, has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s $25 million investment in Ghana’s film industry.

According to Mr. Atakorah who doubles as the CEO of Holy fame Production, the investment will go a long way to support movie stakeholders who are doing their best to revamp the already dead industry.

Mr. Enock Atakorah lauded the President in an exclusive interview with African Entertainment.

He said “The investment has come at the right time to support the film makers who are striving hard to revamp the industry”.

“I urge all stakeholders who are going to be in charge of the project not to be selective in their dealings so as not to jeopardize the President’s dreams of making the industry vibrant and competitive,” he said.

“We all have to come together and support this move because movies contribute to the happiness of the people as well promoting our arts and culture,’’ he said.

Mr. Atakorah added that movie producers are capable of generating storylines that could compete on the international film market but their problems were always associated with lack of financing which he believes the President’s investment could make a huge difference.

The Presidential Film Pitch Series was launched on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

The Presidential Film Pitch Series is a film activation program in Ghana aimed at creating a platform for Ghanaian filmmakers with projects within the film ecosystem to engage investors, broadcasters, distributors, sponsors, and platforms around the world for potential opportunities.

The  Series platform is expected to lead the production of some 200 films and generate over 40,000 jobs annually.

Govt Must Test Water Quality At Landfills Twice Yearly – MPs Recommend

The central government has been asked to ensure that the testing of the quality of water at the various landfills is done at least twice every year.

Making the call, Members of Parliament (MPs) of three Parliamentary Select Committees namely Local Government and Rural Development, Works and Housing, and Environment—contended that it was good UNICEF was supporting the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to test the quality of water at the landfills across the country.

The MPs made the call on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, during a working visit to the Gbalahi landfill site at the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly, Northern Region.

Addressing the media, the Chairman of the Committee on Environment, Dr Emmanuel Marfo, who is also the MP for Oforikrom in the Ashanti Region, entreated government to ensure the testing of the water quality at the various landfills is done twice a year.

According to him, it was not right to leave the testing of the water quality at landfills to the care of donors.

In this regard, he called on government to support the local assemblies with adequate funds for them to carry out regular water quality testing at the landfills.

“The testing of the quality of water at the landfills must not be left at the mercy/care of donors. Government must find a way of supporting the local assemblies with funds—if it means integrating it into the national budget so that the testing can be done at least twice in a year,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr Marfo encouraged the assemblies to ensure the quality of water at the landfills are closely monitored and treated to avoid a situation where they could enter the food chain.

“…and the danger here is that if this toxic water from the landfills is not treated and it finds its way into the food chain through farms close to these sites, that will spell disaster for this country,” he warned.

The Chairman of the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, encouraged Zoomlion Ghana Limited to speedily complete the ongoing construction of Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECoPs) in all the 16 regions.

The IRECoPs, he pointed out, when completed, will help in tackling the problem of waste management in the country.

“I would like to commend Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the good job done so far. We will, however, like to encourage the company to speed up works on the projects to help in solving the sanitation issues in the country,” he encouraged.

He indicated that all the 16 regions were ready for the operationalisation of the waste treatment facilities.

He also applauded Zoomlion for taking up the challenge of constructing liquid and solid waste treatment facilities.

“It is a big challenge and one that should have been taken up by the government, but the collaboration between Zoomlion and the government is laudable,” he noted.

According to him, members of the three committees were impressed with the progress of work and management of the Gbalahi landfill site.

“Members of the committees are happy with what we are witnessing here at the Tamale landfill site,” he said.

He was also full of praise for the Northern Regional Coordinating Council for their efforts in managing waste in Tamale and its adjoining towns and communities.

On the management of landfills, a Ranking Member of the Local Government and Rural Development Committee and MP for Odododiodio, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, commended managers of the Tamale landfill site for managing it well.

However, he called for compensation for rice farmers who had to relocate due to the site and whose farms were destroyed by polluted flooding waters from the landfill.

“I must commend whoever is managing the landfill [Gbalahi landfill] here because I have gone up there and I like the way the place has been compacted.”

….I was here last year and it was bad but this time it is very good. I would like to, however, recommend that rice farmers who had to relocate due to the dumping site are given some compensation by the government,” he recommended.

Most of the farmers, he explained, had to relocate due to the poisonous water coming from the dumping site, adding that “and so I am particularly happy I am seeing this.”

The General Manager (GM) of Waste Landfills Company Limited, Peter Dagadu Kwei assured the parliamentarians that his outfit was putting in place measures to facilitate the smooth operation of the recycling plant.

He indicated that by the end of August, this year, the Tamale IRECoP will begin operations.

On that score, he stressed the need for the enforcement of the sanitation bye-laws by the local assemblies.

Members of the three parliamentary select committees have been touring some recycling plants across the country and are impressed with the work done so far.

Already, the team has visited landfills and ongoing construction of IRECoPs in regions including Western, Western North, Ahafo, Bono and Ashanti Regions.

With the Northern Region tour completed, the team conclude their tour with a trip to the Savannah and North East Regions before Parliament reconvenes.

Wendy Williams Clashes With Joseline Hernandez During Explosive Interview

Credit: Thebreakfastclub

Joseline Hernandez asked Wendy Williams to give Black women their flowers and the TV host took it a bit too literally.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Wendy Williams Show, the Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta star made an appearance to discuss the second season of her reality series, Joseline’s Cabaret: Miami. However, the interview turned sour as soon as it began after Wendy introduced Joseline and commented on her changing looks.

“You know Miss Wendy, I just must say this to you: I hope you’re going to give me my flowers today. I hope you’re gonna honor how much work I put out there,” Joseline replied. “I’m an accomplished woman and I just feel like every time I come to your show, you don’t give me those flowers now. You know? And Wendy, you’re 35 years my senior. I should get those flowers from you. I should feel wanted by people like you. And not just me, all the other young girls.”

While Wendy attempted to reassure Joseline that she is “wanted by her,” and considers her to be entertaining, Joseline wasn’t having it.

“We feel like you be trying us. We feel like you don’t really be rooting for us, especially with me. Every time I come on your show, you always wanna compare me to another broad,” the “Puertican Princess” continued. “I don’t need to be compared; I’ve made my own brand. I’ve made my own brand for years. I’ve been out here for the past decade, I’ve got my own show, I franchised my own show to another network. I have the number one show in the country.”

Wendy then interjected, saying, “No, you have the number one show on Zeus and you got renewed for a third season, which needs to be commended.”

“You feel undervalued? Well so do I, okay?” Wendy explained. “You know what, Joseline, because you’re a part of pop culture, this is what I do. But if you possibly think that I leave here every day and don’t feel undervalued for something that I do as a woman—we’re not gonna even talk about race—just as a woman? I still don’t make that dollar-for-dollar that men make, but anyway, Shoe Cam, please. Let me see your shoes.”

Despite Wendy’s attempt to turn the interview round by having Joseline show off her shoes, the reality star didn’t back down and continued to state her piece. At one point she even took Wendy to task for not giving women of color who have appeared on The Wendy Williams Show their flowers, to which Wendy responded by throwing one of her on-set flowers at the camera.

Eventually, the two were able to get to the actual interview with Joseline discussing her reality series, and opening up about her fiancé.

The ladies even appeared to end the interview on seemingly good terms.

Ghana Continues to enhance food storage capacity – Foreign Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has stated that the Government of Ghana, as part of the implementation of the Regional Food Security Storage, continues to enhance the country’s food storage capacity.

She said Government continues to strengthen the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to manage these storage facilities, as well as ensure that agricultural produce are safe and suitable for human consumption at all times.

The Minister was speaking on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at the International Conference on the West African Food Security Storage System and the Building of a multilateral partnership.

She stated that “Indeed, the enhancement of storage systems in Ghana and across the sub-region is also linked to the creation of employment in the informal sector.”

The Minister indicated that “Ghana, with the support of ECOWAS, has domesticated its national storage policy in line with the implementation of the regional food security storage strategy in West Africa.”

“While previous and on-going campaigns for food security in the sub-region have led to an appreciable improvement in the performance of both the agricultural and food storage sectors, food and nutritional insecurity still remains a major area of concern for Member States. It is for this reason that all Member States and relevant stakeholders need to boost their collaborative efforts for the operationalization and success of the regional reserve which is necessary and fundamental in the consolidation of regional solidarity and integration,” she added.

It would be recalled that the West Africa Regional Food Security Reserve was adopted in February 2013 by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to strengthen the region’s leadership in the resolution of food, nutrition and pastoral crises.

It is intended primarily for emergency operations in the event of a crisis and consists of one-third physical stocks and two-thirds financial reserves. The Regional Food Security Reserve aims to complement the efforts of the Member States to provide rapid and diversified food and nutrition assistance, express regional solidarity to Member States and affected populations through transparent, equitable and predictable mechanisms, contribute to food sovereignty and to the political, economic and trade integration of West Africa.

“With the political support of the G20 and the financial support of the European Union, the ECOWAS Commission, in 2015, commenced work towards the effective operationalization of this regional storage system as an important step in integration and regional solidarity. After 5 years of implementation of the Project, an internal assessment has revealed important achievements, challenges and lessons learnt in order to make the regional stockholding strategy a decisive instrument for the elimination of hunger in the region by 2030,” she said.

“It is my fervent hope that this Conference will provide the much-needed platform for information and experience-sharing on food storage systems between West Africa and its global partners with the objective of addressing existing challenges and enhancing regional capacity to confront the projected food shortages and nutritional challenges. The outcome of our deliberations should also facilitate the creation of a renewed multilateral partnership to strengthen the resilience of the regional storage system and its capacity to respond effectively to the existing food, nutrition and pastoral crises.”

Exclusive: AfCFTA Boss Covid-19 saga: hotels allegedly conniving with KIA staff to give positive test results

African Entertainment has gathered that medical staff at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) who are in charge of coronavirus testing of passengers arriving into Ghana are allegedly conniving with big hotels to ‘force’ false positive coronavirus test results on some travellers, especially big businessmen and women.

Following the Ghana Health Service (GHS) denial on April 29, 2021, that the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretary General Wamkele Mene received a fake covid-19 test result at KIA as alleged by AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra, African Entertainment decided to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

During the investigation, African Entertainment got hold of Mr. Mene’s laboratory test result from The Trust Hospital Company Limited. The Trust Hospital Company Limited gave a negative covid-19 test result for Mr. Mene. His age as captured on the test result from the Trust Hospital was 44 and the result showed that his blood sample was collected on April 24, 2021 and result was given same day.

African Entertainment further took upon itself to check for the authentic test result of Mr. Mene from the second health facility he visited to conduct covid-19 test. That health facility was LEDing Medical Laboratory.

The result showed that Mr. Mene blood sample was taken by LEDing Medical Laboratory on April 23, 2021. His age matched with the age on The Trust Hospital form.

LEDing Medical Laboratory equally returned a negative test just as The Trust Hospital Company Limited did but strangely, it was only at the KIA that Mr. Mene got a ‘positive’ test result.

Sources who pleaded anonymity told African Entertainment that despite the denial by GHS, KIA staff were allegedly conniving with hotels to give positive test results.

One deep throat source told African Entertainment that “it is an entirely profitable business between the hotels and KIA where businessmen and other persons are given positive test results upon arrival into Ghana and then asked to go quarantine at the hotels. It’s a way for the hotels to make money.”

Again, sources say travellers who arrived in Ghana are “falsely given positive covid-19 test results” but cannot afford hotel bills are forced to quarantine at the Patang Hospital.

A source who claimed to have suffered similar fate told African Entertainment that sometimes “about 15 persons are forced in one room at Patang Hospital to quarantine,” raising health concerns.

Sources say a lot of the positive covid-19 test results from KIA are grossly inaccurate and purely come with business motive by hotels and KIA staff.

AfCFTA Boss case in detail

The Ghana Health Service  had dismissed claims that the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) produced a false positive coronavirus test for the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene.

It would be recalled that the Secretariat of AfCFTA, issued a statement in Accra a few days ago, alleging that a false positive coronavirus test result was produced for Mr Mene.

In a statement, the Secretariat said
a routine antigen test was performed on Mr Mene at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from a mission outside Ghana, which came out positive.

Following the initial positive test result, the Secretariat indicated that Mr Mene took precautionary steps and went into quarantine.

“His medical team advised him to undergo further independent PCR tests. Consequently, His Excellency undertook two independent tests from two different private labs. Both independent PCR tests returned a negative result, clearing the Secretary-General of COVID-19,” the statement noted.

“It appears that the COVID-19 antigen test that was conducted at the airport produced a false positive result,” according to AfCFTA Secretariat.

But the Ghana Health Service in a statement signed by its Director General, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, says the claim by AfCFTA Secretariat was “not accurate.”

Chioma went BLACK on her Instagram page to celebrate her birthday and to us, she is trying to send a message across that the Assurance 2021 has fallen flat.

In her caption, she simply wrote; “God is so good… 26 and blessed!! 🥳🎉💕”. If Davido doesn’t wish her on this glorious day, then you know what it is, right?

She was speaking during a courtesy call paid on her by the Honorary Consular Corps in Ghana.

The Dean of the Honorary Consular Corps in Ghana, the Honorary Consul of Belgium together with three Honorary Consuls on Tuesday, 27th April, 2021 paid a courtesy call on Madam Botchwey.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed her admiration for their efforts in strengthening further the relations between their sending states, which do not have full Diplomatic Missions in Ghana and the country.

She mentioned the efforts by the Ministry to ensure that all privileges due the Honorary Consular Corps as stated in the Vienna Convention on Consular relation 1963 are extended to them.

She made reference to a Stakeholder meeting in November, 2020 between officials of the Ministry, the Police, DVLA etc. to deliberate on appropriate vehicle registration number plates and other privileges for the Honorary Consular Corps after which a circular Note Verbale was sent to all Honorary Consuls conveying the outcomes and decisions for guidance and compliance.
