Video: $200m Saglemi Housing Project Rot Away As Government Pursues Epic Legal Battle

The $200 million Saglemi Housing Project in the Greater Accra Region appears to be going rot as Government pursues an ‘epic’ legal battle against some officials of the erstwhile President John Mahama’s Government.

A six-minutes-fifty-two-seconds video obtained by African Entertainment, showed a concerned Ghanaian man expressing profound frustrations about the seeming abandonment of the project by the President Nana Akufo-Addo’s Government.

In the video, grass and trees appeared to have taken over the houses, with the man whose identity is yet to be known, literally weeping and showing parts of the houses including windows and doors which have been destroyed.

The man simply could not fathom why thousands of houses have been left to go rot when millions of Ghanaians are homeless. Ghana housing deficit hovers around 2.2 million.

He therefore gave the President Akufo-Addo’s government a one month ultimatum to commence work on the project, warning that failure to resume work on the project will compel him to ask Ghanaians to go and stay in the houses.

Background

African Entertainment understands that the Saglemi housing project was originally planned to deliver 5,000 housing units.

However, the scope of work was revised. The revised scope of work became a subject of police investigation after Mr Akufo-Addo assumed office in 2017.

It would be recalled that the Director of Housing at the Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr. Theresa Tuffour, revealed that out of the 1,502 units at the Saglemi project site, the contractors completed 1,389, pending the installation of utilities.

According to her,  386 units were at various stages of completion, while 139 town houses had been completed, awaiting the provision of utilities.

The Saglemi Project has stalled for nearly five years to allow for a government probe into alleged infractions regarding the execution of the deal.

Former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources,  Atta Akyea had assured Parliamentarians in 2020 that a civil action will be pursued to recover monies lost to the state.
